Medical Visa

Who can apply?

Medical Visa is issued for the purpose of seeking medical treatment in recognised/specialised treatment centres in India. Medical documents establishing the need for medical treatment in India along with the offer of treatment from a recognised medical institution in India are necessary to consider grant of Medical Visa. Proof of availability of sufficient funds for the duration of stay and the expenses for medical treatment in India should also be submitted with confirmed return tickets.

Required Documents

Medical Visa is issued for the purpose of seeking medical treatment in recognised/specialised treatment centres in India. Medical documents establishing the need for medical treatment in India along with the offer of treatment from a recognised medical institution in India are necessary to consider grant of Medical Visa. Proof of availability of sufficient funds for the duration of stay and the expenses for medical treatment in India should also be submitted with confirmed return tickets. Following documents are to be submitted along with visa application form:

  1. One printed copy of the online visa application form duly signed on both pages
  2. One recent photograph as per photo specifications
  3. Original passport with at least two blank pages and minimum 6 months validity
  4. Copy of profile page of passport. If applicant is holding dual/multiple nationality, copy of profile page of all passports
  5. Copy of Hong Kong/Macau ID for residents and copy of valid HK/Macau visa for non residents
  6. Offer of treatment from recognized Hospital in India
  7. Recommendation letter from treating Doctor from Hong Kong/Macau to undergo treatment in India.
  8. Bank statement as proof of financial standing
  9. Self undertaking as per Form-II regarding use of satellite phone
  10. General self undertaking as per Form-III

Note: As per the latest instructions, commissioning of surrogacy in India by foreign nationals (including OCI cardholders) is not permitted and no visa is now granted for this purpose.

Medical Attendant Visa

Medical attendant visa is issued to family members/attendants of patients who are granted medical visa to undergo treatment in India. Following additional documents are to be submitted along with visa application form:

  1. Letter from Medical authorities in Hong Kong specifying the requirement of medical attendant
  2. Letter from Indian Hospital authorities recommending the need of medical attendant.
  3. Copy of Medical Visa of the patient who is required to be accompanied by the applicant ( in case medical visa is already issued)
  4. Self undertaking as per Form-II regarding use of satellite phone
  5. General self undertaking as per Form-III

Processing Time

Processing time : For Non HK Passport holders Min 7-10 working days . For HK Passport holder 5-6 working days

Note: Any person seeking a Visa to India for purpose of entering into a surrogacy arrangement must ascertain beforehand whether the law of that country permits surrogacy and will provide appropriate travel documents to the child for accompanying the surrogate parents. Entering into surrogacy arrangement under any other Visa not sought for surrogacy is punishable under the Indian law.

Applicants are advised to ensure the following before making the surrogacy arrangement.

  • - The foreigner man and woman should be married and the marriage should have sustained for at least two years.
  • - A letter from Embassy of foreign country in India or Foreign Ministry of the country stating that (a) the country recognises surrogacy and (b) the child/children born to commissioning couple through the surrogate mother will be permitted entry into their country as biological child/children of the couple commissioning surrogacy.
  • - Undertaking from the couple that they would take care of the child/children born out of surrogacy.
  • - The treatment to be taken at Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) clinics recognised by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
  • - Notarised agreement between applicant couple and prospective Indian surrogate mother.

Couple can visit India for reconnaissance trip on Tourist Visa for executing agreement and for finding suitable hospitals. However, no samples can be given to any clinic during visit on Tourist Visas.
